Some of you may wonder why in the world I would post so many “mini” articles on the side of this page using twitter. But, I think it’s useful. Besides being highly addictive, twitter is a great tool that could actually be useful in life, if you use it correctly.
Here are 5 ways Twitter can be useful:
Keeps you accountable – If you use it all the time, you could use twitter to answer the question, “What are you doing?” You could use it to be accountable with a diet answering the question, “What are you eating?” Either way, twitter keeps you updated on what you are doing all the time, allowing you to evaluate your time management and other things.
Keeps you connected – If your friends are on twitter, you can stay connected with them. Your relatives, groups you are part of, etc, can all keep up with each other using twitter.
Keeps you aware – I’m going on one year of using twitter (this month), and I can look back at what I have done over the last year by looking at my tweets. The archive is a great way of looking back at your accomplishments, feelings, and relationships.
Keeps you informed – There are many news outlets on twitter. CNN breaking news, BBC, and others post news stories all the time. I subscribe to a few of these, and I get the news quickly.
Keeps you entertained – Twitter is very entertaining. It helps you break up the monotony of work. You can check it out to see some fleeting thoughts by other people. It’s a great way to see what’s happening, and it’s fun because it is always updated (when the site is working).
I also saw this post the other day about twitter and Facebook updates creating a social sixth sense. I love how it explains how we can use these things to get to know people better and to better connect with them in real life.
If you use twitter, what are your reasons? Is it useful to you?
Things like this new video from Will.I.Am happen when artists and politics meet. I always think it’s interesting when celebrities try to leverage their fame to get something done.
Why should we listen any more to Oprah than we listen to the guy down the street? What do celebrities know about politics? Since when are they experts? Their voice is as important as the other guys, but not more important. We tend to take what they say with more authority, and I’m not sure why.
By the way, interesting use of the Spanish language and Latin celebrities. Their vote will be important in this election.
On the other hand, the video is great. I love how they are using new media to distribute messages to people. I like the initiative shown and the creativity. This kind of stuff needs to be happening. It appeals to voters and to the next generation. I think it will also have an impact in the election.
As you already know, I’m a big geek. I’m into all sorts of stuff that would classify me as one of the biggest geeks you know. But, because of that, I’m constantly trying to think of ways that we should use technology to make our ministries better.
So, I thought of an idea to try to create a network of youth workers and sort of an online community for those involved in youth ministry in the Spanish speaking world. I have a list of about 200 people who have attended a workshop or conference with us, so I invited them to participate in a Youth Ministry Network. It’s sort of a social network for Spanish speaking youth workers.
The goal of the Center for Youth Ministry is to meet, train, network, and support youth workers. I believe that this netword can serve as a tool that will help us do all of those things, especially meet, network, and support. I’m hoping it will serve to get the word out there about the youth ministry program at the seminary, too.
I’ve been on Twitter for a little while now. This morning, it hit me that it would be a great way for a magazine or other company to post little tips or tricks. For example, Group Magazine (a youth ministry magazine) could post little ideas for youth workers on twitter. People could sign up to get them on their cell phones or on IM. If they did it just right, it wouldn’t be annoying and it could work. Just a thought.
A pastor could use it to continue the conversation created by a sermon or a sermon series. They could also use it to get people to start thinking about the topic for the weekend. I think there are lots of uses for it. Of course, I’m an “early adopter” when it comes to technology, so I doubt that many people would actually use it for this stuff.
I’ve been playing around a little with ustream.tv, and I think that for our context, this may have huge implications.
As you know, we’ve been thinking about starting an informal youth ministry training program, which would consist of classes on Saturday mornings. The program would last about a year, and it would involve basic youth ministry principles that we teach at the seminary. I’ve been thinking about offering the classes in 3 different ways: Live in person, online downloads, or distance (with CDs and DVDs).
Now, we may have the option of doing it live online. With Ustream, you can broadcast live video online (it’s really easy to use). Your video also has a little chat box, where people could ask questions and you could interact with them. I’m just playing around with some ideas, but I think it could be a good use of technology for classes, conferences, workshops, etc.
That doesn’t even include the personal uses such as broadcasting birthday parties, etc, for the family.
