My World Cup Picks

The World Cup is coming to a close. I have followed the tournament like this:

  • In the first round, the USA was my team. Unfortunately, they didn’t make it out of the first round.
  • In the second round, I started off wanting Mexico to win, but they lost to Argentina.
  • With Mexico gone, I was going with Argentina to win, but they lost to Germany.
  • In the semifinals, I wanted Germany and Portugal to win, but they both lost.
  • Now, in the final, I am cheering for Italy (since the USA tied against them), which is probably good news for France.

It’s a good thing I am not a betting man. I would be out a lot of money by now.

Happy Fourth of July

With the flagA bunch of us gringos went up to Mexico City Christian Academy today to cook out and celebrate the 4th of July. We brought ka-bobs and apple pie, and there was so much food. It was a great time to hang out with the other missionaries and celebrate the 230th birthday of the USA.

We also watched the launch of the space shuttle online, played some Farkle, and then we caught the end of the game between Italy and Germany. What a finish! I guess my pick for the winner was off. The crazy thing is that the US tied Italy. I guess now, Portugal has a better chance of winning.

Well…Happy 4th of July, everyone!

RIBET meeting

Angel 2Went with most of the faculty of the Seminary downtown today for a meeting of the International Network of Baptist Theological Education (or something like that).

We talked about collaboration in Theological Education throughout Latin America. Interesting opportunities were discussed, but I wish we would have put out some more practical things and actually begun something. Everyone can agree that collaboration needs to take place, but who’s going to actually start something? We’ll see what comes from it, if anything.

I did get to meet some people from different seminaries both in Mexico and in other parts of Latin America. Hopefully, there will be some future opportunities. It was good to spend some time with the faculty of the seminary.

Elections

The voting is over, but the controversy is beginning. Both candidates claim victory in the Mexican Presidential race. It’s too close to call right now, so the Federal Electoral Institute is going to have the official count start on Wednesday. That means right now, they don’t know who won, even though both candidates (and their supporters) believe they won. The winner only needs to have the most votes. So, the whole country holds its breath until after the official count.
