Not so fast

The election isn’t quite over, as López Obrador rallies his supporters today in the zócalo to say that he will protest the outcome of the election. One thing that caught my attention was that he said that if there is violence, it will because the government won’t permit a recount. They are planning another protest next Sunday. I assume that people from all over Mexico (especially the southern states) will march to Mexico City this week.

It was pretty amazing to see the downtown square packed full of supporters. That is one thing that amazes me living here. There are a lot of protests. One time, I was stuck downtown because a protest shut off a main road. Another day, I saw a TON of police officers out because there would be a protest later that day. Interesting that I can’t remember seeing a protest when I lived in the US.

A Guide to Culture

I came across this adaptation of 1 Corinthians 13 today while I was cleaning out my desk. It’s from Images, a Navigator newsletter, November 1997.

If I speak with the tongue of a national, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

If I wear the national dress and understand the culture and all forms of etiquette, and if I copy all mannerisms so that I could pass for a national, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor, and if I spend my energy without reserve, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love endures long hours of language study, and is kind to those who mock his accent. Love does not envy those who stayed home; love does not exalt his home culture, is not proud of his national superiority, does not boast about the way we do it back home, does not seek his own ways, is not easily provoked into telling about the beauty of his home country, does not think evil about this culture; love bears all criticism about his home culture, believes all good things about this new culture, confidently anticipates being at home in this place, endures all inconveniences.

Sorry to have been talking about the election so much the last few posts. In case you’re tired of that, here’s a picture that is sure to make you smile.

Today, I translated notes for my next seminary class, made a survey to pass out at a national Baptist youth conference coming soon, and worked on some website stuff. The election is NOT the only thing I’m thinking about, even if it’s been the only thing I’ve been blogging about for a while.

And we have a winner…for now

Early today, the Federal Electoral Institute declared Felipe Calderón the winner of the election by half a percentage point, or about 200,000 votes. He is what the news is calling the “conservative” candidate. His opponent, however, is claiming that there was fraud in the election process, and on Saturday, they will be having a big demonstration in the Zócalo. They did clean up a lot of the election posters around town today, even if the election isn’t officially over yet.
