Thanksgiving – A foreign holiday

11-24-06 Thanksgiving Day 015

We had to do a few interesting things to celebrate Thanksgiving in Mexico. Since it’s not celebrated here, and many of the things that we have in the USA aren’t here, we had to improvise. For example:

  • To make sausage stuffing, we had to cut open breakfast sausage links to get the sausage meat out of the casings.
  • We had to import stuffing mix.
  • We had to go to a store that has mostly American products (Waldo’s Mart) to buy canned green beans.
  • We didn’t get to watch the Dolphins’ game because they only showed the Cowboys and Buccaneers game.
  • We had to do our DAY AFTER THANKSGIVING shopping online. (Actually, that was better than fighting the crowds.)
  • We got lucky that there was no youth ministry class at the seminary on Thursday (but there was class today).

We’re not complaining. We are very thankful that we could eat Thanksgiving meal together as a family and spend time with our friends last night. We are very blessed and thankful to serve in Mexico. THANK YOU for your continued support and prayers for us and the ministry here.

Thanksgiving in Mexico

Virginia Turkey Producto de Chile

Here are two pictures of our Thanksgiving turkey this year. We bought it from Sam’s Club here in Mexico. The name brand is “Virginia Turkey.” When we read that, we thought that it must be imported from Virginia, USA. Then we kept reading the packaging to find out that it is a product of Chile. I wonder if it is from Virginia, Chile. It didn’t taste any different than any other turkey we’ve had before. In fact, it was delicious. It was the first time Janell cooked a turkey by herself, and it was great!

Apple Pie apple cake

Then there was dessert! We have apple pie, apple cake, and a cheesecake. Wow. What a spread for the three of us. We did bring some of the cake to the meal we had with the other missionaries, but that still left us with a lot of food. In fact, we’re not even finished eating.

Teeth

Funny Face

Yesterday, Nathan got into my disguise drawer and put on these fake teeth. It was hilarious, so I thought I’d share it with you.

Freezing

It is currently 32 degrees outside in Mexico City. This wouldn’t be a big deal except for the fact that every building is completely concrete. There is no insulation, making our house an icebox, igloo, or some other thing that is really cold. Brrrrrrr!!!

You may not have heard

miguel and horacio YS Chile directorsDid you know there was a YouthSpecialties in Latin America? Maybe you already knew that. What you may not have known was that YouthSpecialties, Chile, just opened up its doors.

Our friend Aaron sent us the pictures of the launch of Youthspecialties, Chile. He has been working in Chile for 8 years now, and is very excited about what God is doing in youth ministry there. Please pray for this time of transition for him and YouthSpecialties.
