Today is Carson’s birthday. He is definitely one of the coolest kids I know, and I am so glad it’s his birthday today. Since it’s his birthday, we get to eat at Ruby Tuesday’s for dinner and eat cake and ice cream at his house. For real, though, Carson is a great guy, even if he always beats me at PS2 or Gamecube or whatever we choose to play. This picture is the one his mom sent out to announce his birthday. Classic.

Since I’m thinking about this, I thought I’d put it here. It’s amazing to me how if a country’s government wants to control its population, they control the access to media. If you want to control what a person thinks or is, you control what they have access to as far as information. If you can control everything a person reads, listens to, or watches, you will be able to control what they think. It’s an interesting phenomena that is still happening in our world today.
The next time you go to research something, think about the wonderful privilege it is to have access to the internet or other media outlets. What if you could only hear one side of the story? What if there was no second opinion? It would be a lot more difficult. I never really thought that much about freedom of the press before today, but now I understand why we fight for that freedom.
We got good news yesterday about our housing situation. Right now, we live in a house owned by the International Mission Board. We are renting it from them at a great price. Our “contract” with them is up in August, but we just renewed until August 2007. This will be the longest we have ever lived in one place.
We figured it out that we have lived in 5 different places in the 2 and a half years we have lived in Mexico. Before moving to Mexico, we lived in 5 places in 5 years. So, it’s good to have some “stability,” even if it’s only for a little while.
Today was a pretty good day. I had the chance to finish up writing our June Newsletter and sent it out to our church. Tonight I went to Ruby Tuesday with a bunch of missionaries for Cole’s 17th birthday. We had some really good food and then, we went back to their house for some dessert. Cole got tons of CDs for his birthday, and I had a great time with our friends here in Mexico City. I got to the airport today in Guadalajara (more on that later) to find out that my flight was cancelled. When I asked why it was cancelled, the lady said that they had planned to cancel that flight. I don’t really understand why they would sell me a ticket for a flight that they were planning on cancelling. Maybe that was so I would show up an hour earlier because I thought that my flight was leaving at 4 and so they could really put me on the flight that left at 5. I’ll never understand.
