Today was the first day of the diploma classes for this year (Spanish link). We have a location in the south of the city as well as at the Seminary in the north of the city. Today I visited the class in the south.
There are 12 students enrolled in the diploma classes this month, which are designed to be less formal and to help those who are very actively involved in their local church youth ministry and cannot enroll in the Bachelor’s degree (yet).
The class for this month is “Contemporary Communication to Adolecents.” In fact, it’s almost three classes in one. We’re teaching Bible study methods, Principles of Preaching, and How to Create Creative Bible Studies. It’s a great class, and I think it’s something that should be very practical.
It’s been a while since I went to Urbana ’09, but I wanted to write down one of the greatest memories I had of my time in St. Louis. It was the second night of the conference, and since I was at my booth during most of the conference activities, I really only had the chance to go to some of the general sessions.
The general sessions were held in the America’s Center, the St. Louis Rams’ stadium. The memory that I don’t want to ever forget was when 16,000 of us stood to sing “In Christ Alone.” It was a powerful moment. The words to the song have grabbed ahold of me since I first heard them a while ago, and when I had the chance to sing them with 16,000 people, mostly college students, I was overwhelmed.
Here’s a the song in case you haven’t ever heard it. If you have heard it, listen again. I hope I never forget this memory of Urbana ’09.
The best place to view the volcanoes in Mexico City is from the airplane when you come in. Just above the layer of smog, you can see the tips of these two gigantic mountains covered in snow.
We’re back in Mexico after about 6 weeks of time in Florida and St. Louis. We had a great time reconnecting with family and friends as well as sharing at churches and representing Youth Ministry International at Urbana ’09.
Now we get to unpack in time to pack again. We’re moving. I’ll give you more details about that soon, but just wanted to write that we are happy to be back. So happy we celebrated by eating some real tacos last night.
I just received a really great note of encouragement on our youth ministry blog in Spanish (www.ministeriojuvenil.com). The youth ministry resource site has received so many great comments and created so many incredible contacts for us. Here is what the comment said (translated into English):
Hi. It is a blessing to have the opportunity to have access to this space and receive refreshment. I am from the city of Cartagena in Colombia, and I serve with my husband as youth pastors in the youth ministry. It is very interesting and edifying to have the opportunity to receive from you all and to be able to bring renewal to our local church. I pray that God will continue filling you with His grace and presence. Congratulations on your work and dedication.
We also received an email from someone today interested in inviting us to teach our informal youth ministry training conference.
We are excited about the possibilities for 2010 as we plan on investing more time in this valuable tool for training youth workers all over Latin America.
