The Orchard Parable

I love stories. I read a great one today on The M Blog about “The Orchard Parable.” It comes from a Moody Monthly magazine article entitled, “Let’s Quit Kidding Ourselves About Missions”, and it starts off like this:

Our Most Important Ministry

Our family is involved in many things. Training youth workers for local churches involves teaching youth ministry courses at the Mexican Baptist Theological Seminary, overseeing ministries in other countries, speaking at youth events, and other important things.

With all of the work that needs to be done, it’s easy for me to get caught up in being busy at “the office” and forget about the most important ministry that takes place in our family: the ministry of discipling and raising our kids.

Wait until your Father gets Home

“Just wait until your father gets home.” I can’t tell you how many times I heard that phrase as a kid. There are only really two options for kids when a father returns either from work or from a long trip: A prize or a punishment.

Today I preached in chapel at the Seminary about 1 Peter 5:1-4. My basic premise was that the “chief Shepherd” is coming back and will as us to give an account of the ministry that we have done with His flock, so we should be busy doing what we need to be doing as leaders.

You can be an Answer to Prayer

Last Friday, we were invited to a birthday party for another missionary kid who has recently moved to Mexico from another Latin American country. He would be turning six years old, and his name is Nathan. Our Nathan was so excited to get to play with another six year old boy who speaks English (our kids have lots of friends, but they all speak Spanish).

Friday was a holiday for us (Mexican Independence Day), and to be honest I didn’t really want to go out on a day when I could just hang out at home all day. But we went to the birthday party anyway. When we got there, I was happy we went because we were the only family with kids who were at the party. Our kids had a blast playing with the four kids from the other Nathan’s family.

The other Nathan’s mom said to us, “You guys are an answer to prayer. We have people in the USA who have been praying that our kids will find friends here.”

Independence Day in Mexico

Independence Day in Mexico

We celebrated Mexican Independence Day with the Seminary Director’s church. It was a fun night full of Mexican history (we failed miserably at the trivia questions…but so did everyone else), delicious food, music, games, and fun.

Our kids dressed up for the occasion, and we had a great time. You can check out our pictures on Flickr or in the slideshow below.
