We brought Benjamin home yesterday, and for the first time, I realized again how much things change when you have a new addition to the family.
All of our relationships are changing, but things are especially changing for Nathan. He’s used to being the only child. Now he’s a big brother. He has to compete for attention, and no matter what we do to include him and pay attention to him, he is going to be looking for attention from his mommy, daddy, and grandparents.
He’s doing well as a big brother, as you can see by the pictures. But, please pray for us as we work through this time of transition. Thanks.
This morning I woke up to Janell telling me that her water had broken. It was 5:30 in the morning. We rapidly got everything together, hopped in the car, and went to the hospital. The crazy day had just begun.
Arriving at the hospital at 6:15, they started checking her out to make sure that she was in labor. She certainly was. The problem was that the baby was breech. They wanted to do a c-section, but he didn’t want to wait for that. He was born at 7:10 with no c-section.
So, Benjamin Joseph was born on July 14, 2008, at 7:10, weighing in at an even 6 pounds and measuring 19 inches long. Mom and baby are doing fine.

The weekend started with the first t-ball game and team pictures. It was the longest morning of my life. We waited for pictures for 45 minutes, and by the time the game started, Nathan had lost most interest in playing. He did well though (see the second video).
Sunday, we went to our church in Palm Harbor, and then we went to the beach to fly our new kite (see the first video). It was a fun family weekend.
As a Dad, there are lots of things that Nathan does that I hope to remember forever. Then there are some things that I know I’ll never forget. One of those things happened last Saturday morning, and it was better than any Father’s Day gift I could have gotten.
Friday night, I flew to Miami after 12 days out of the country. Saturday morning, I arrived just in time for the beginning of Nathan’s first t-ball practice. I walked up to the field from the car, and our eyes met. He came running around the corner and across the bridge that leads to the field. When he got to me, I could see him holding back tears. He was so happy to see me, and it felt so good to hug my little boy.
I’ll never forget his little face in that moment. I hope that he’s always that happy to see me after I’ve been away for awhile. Regardless of how great the trip is, the best part about going on any trip is coming home and seeing my family again.
We went to church at Capital City Baptist Church, and English speaking church in Mexico City, since Easter isn’t celebrated that much in Mexican churches. It seems like Good Friday is celebrated more here than Easter Sunday.
We invited two students from the Seminary over for Easter dinner, and we tried to explain to them how we celebrate Easter in the USA. We had great food, great company, and lots of fun playing with Nathan’s Easter present.
