What does it mean to be culturally relevant? We talked today in Youth Ministry 110 at the seminary about the phrase, “culturally relevant.” We, as the church, must be relevant to those we are trying to reach. We must identify the culture to use the culture to reach the culture. Too often, we are like the woman in the picture, who stare at the “outcasts” or “others” when we should be reaching them. In a survey done by the youth ministry students at the seminary, young people do not attend church because it is “boring”, “has nothing to do with real life”, and “the church doesn’t want us.” It is time that the church of Jesus Christ begins to become relevant to the culture where we live. We can no longer ignore it. We must become “all things to all men so that by all means we can save some.” (1 Corinthians 9:19-25).
