Miami Dolphins’ Fan in Training

Today I told Nathan we were waiting for the Miami Dolphins’ game to start, and he replied, “Miami Dolphins, I better get ready.” He then went and got his jersey and put it on all by himself.

It was an excellent game, where Miami beat Buffalo 38-10 with their backup quarterback. Finally, we got one win this year.

Well, after the game, Nathan and I did our version of the Miami Dolphins’ fight song.

New Family Portrait

We were playing around with the webcam on the computer and took this picture of the whole family. I like it.

This one would be great if we didn’t cut off Ben’s head. I love the expression on Nathan’s face. He was having so much fun.

My Thoughts on Transformers 2

My Thoughts on Transformers 2

Yesterday I went to see Transformers 2.

It’s cheaper here to go on Wednesday. It cost me 40 pesos (about $3 US) to go to see the show. In fact, thanks to the length of the movie (see below), it almost cost me more to park the car (30 pesos) than it did to enter the movie.

Here are a few quick thoughts on Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen.

  1. It’s long. Two hours and thirty minutes is a long movie. There were times when I felt like I was just waiting for the action to start again. It seemed long to me. I went into it knowing that it was 150 minutes (thanks to the Internet Movie Database), but I had no idea it would feel as long as it did. This makes it hard for me to think about taking my 4 year old son to see it (even though he LOVES transformers).
  2. Sometimes it’s hard to follow the action. The fight scenes are cool, but sometimes I found myself trying to figure out who was an autobot and who was a decepticon. It all looked like a big heap of metal fighting sometimes.
  3. Is it a family movie or not? It almost felt like they tried to add in some “adult humor” that didn’t really fit. There were times when I was thinking, “Do we really need to watch the mom get high off of marihuana filled brownies?”
  4. The action and graphics are pretty cool. I especially like it when you see one of the transformers actually “transform.”

Overall, it was average. Not great. Not horrible. Just good. But that’s my opinion.

Those are my thoughts. If you’ve seen it, what do you think?

By the way, did you know that the guy who does the voice of Optimus Prime also does the voice of Eeyore on Tigger and Pooh?

Mexico vs Trinidad and Tobago

There’s no better cultural experience than going to a national team’s soccer game. So, when I found out that “El Tri,” the other name for the Mexican soccer team, was playing in Estadio Azteca here in Mexico City, I had to find a way to go.

I had been to one of these games before, but it was only a friendly match against the Republic of Congo. This time, it’s a World Cup Qualifier. In other words, this one really counted. Especially since Mexico is on the brink of being left out of next year’s World Cup, something that would be unheard of.

So Hube, Edgar, Paco, and I left from the Seminary at 5:30, thinking that we had plenty of time to get to the stadium. Well, we were wrong. At 8:30, we were exiting off the main road to get to the stadium. We put the radio on and heard the national anthems. We knew we were late.

Then, we heard that the game had started, and Mexico scored a goal in the first minute. We were still in line to find parking. As we pulled up closer to the stadium, we realized that the parking lot to the stadium was closed. So we had to park on the road in front of someone’s house and pay 20 pesos more than we would have paid at the stadium parking lot.

We walked to the stadium entrance, and as we were entering, they informed Huberto that he couldn’t bring in his backpack. So he left it at one of the places where they were selling t-shirts. We got into the stadium to watch the final 5 minutes of the first half.

But the in the last few minutes of the first half, Trinidad and Tobago scored a goal, which made everyone in the stadium upset.

We got to watch the second half from our nose-bleed section seats, which actually weren’t that bad. We saw the “golazo” by Mexico and went home happy with a 2-1 victory and 3 more points for Mexico in their quest to qualify for the 2010 World Cup (check the video highlights here).

Leaving where we were parked, none of the four of us who were in the car knew which way to go. We finally made it to a recognizable place, but by now, we were starving, so we had to stop to get some tacos on the way home.

Overall, it was a fun night, despite the 5 or 6 hours we spent in the car in traffic and/or lost in Mexico City. I’m glad we went, and I’m looking forward to August 12 when the United States comes to town to play against Mexico for bragging rights and points towards the World Cup.

Lion Dog

This poor dog is going to have an identity crisis. He’s not going to be sure if he’s a lion or a dog. He lives in our neighborhood, and every once in a while they give him this great haircut.

Me and Larry King

Me and Larry King

Monday afternoon I was playing on the beach with Nathan in Huatulco, Oaxaca, when Janell came running up to me with my cell phone. She was talking with Randy Smith of Youth Ministry International. I took the phone, and Randy told me that the Larry King show had contacted him and wanted to put me on their show that evening (here’s his blog post about the show).

A little later, I was on the phone with one of the producers of the show. She had seen that we had blogged about Swine Flu in Mexico City and was wondering what our experience had been (she had left a comment here on the blog, but I wasn’t checking while on vacation). I told her the basic story, and she said that Larry King would like to interview me about it later that evening. Everything was set up. I was going to be on Larry King.

She asked me to send in some pictures of what we had observed in the airport with the Swine Flu as well as a photo of me. So I did. She called back and said that they would be calling me around 8:05 pm Central Time to do the interview. So I sent out a few tweets and sent emails to our family and friends.

Then, I got another voicemail. It turns out that the show decided to cancel the part of interviewing me. Nancy was super nice throughout the whole process. I imagine that she has to cancel on people all the time. I have to admit I was a little disappointed.

But, at least I have a good story to tell about the day Larry King contacted me!
