Exam day

Today, I gave the first mid-term exam I will give this quarter. It was in Principles of Youth Ministry, and the students did really well. The average grade was 92%. Not too shabby. These first year students are pretty good students. Of course, this course is one of the easier ones we teach. I think my tests are good indicators of their progress, but they also have a big final project (a paper). Hopefully, they won’t procrastinate on it.

My other class has an exam scheduled for Tuesday. It’s harder to evaluate that class because the content is more concept driven for the purpose of understanding. It’s not a facts and figures, principles kind of class. It’s more a conceptual, difficult to understand class. Plus, there’s always the fact that this weekend is a holiday, and there are many activities planned at the churches where the students work. Anyway, I’ll let you know how their exam goes next Tuesday.

It’s Showtime

appleshowtime.jpgIf you’ve ever seen the movie Napoleon Dynamite, you should remember one of the great lines in the movie when Uncle Rico is selling the plastic containers to the couple and offers them a ship in a bottle. The lady looks at her husband and whispers, “I want that.”

That’s the way I feel after seeing the new announcements by Steve Jobs yesterday about the new Apple products. I have been wanting to get an iPod nano to run with, but Janell wants to be able to download TV shows that we can’t get here. So, my mind has been changed to really want a video iPod. Who knows if it will be a reality, but that’s my birthday wish. It would be great for trips and stuff, too, where we could bring movies with us. Boy…the more I think about it, the more I want it!

Fiesta Mexicana grocery store ad

Here’s the grocery store ad for this week here in Mexico. Friday night is the celebration of Independence Day here, so they are selling all sorts of typical Mexican stuff. My favorite is the “pig head” that you can buy per kilo.

Funny thing about preachers…

After a church service on Sunday morning, a young boy suddenly announced to his mother, “Mom, I’ve decided to become a minister when I grow up.”

“That’s okay with us, but what made you decide that?

“Well,” said the little boy, “I have to go to church on Sunday anyway, and I figure it’ll be more fun to stand up and yell, than to sit and listen.”
