Darkness and Light

Darkness and Light

Just before I went to bed last night I had a thought that I posted both on twitter and facebook.

It was my gut reaction after having read this article about of six young people being shot in Tepito, a neighborhood in Mexico City. There have been more than 7,000 people killed this year alone in Mexico as a result of the violence.

We have friends who are moving soon to Ciudad Juarez, where another five women were killed earlier yesterday in a shooting.

All of this causes conflict in my heart and soul. There is no doubt that violence is spreading all over the world. It is certain that Mexico has its dangers. There are many things happening. And it is exactly why the church of Jesus Christ must be present there.

tweet on darkness

When I write that “It is in the darkest of hours that the light must shine the brightest” I mean that in the deepest of darkness is where the light is most needed. The gospel must shine in the darkness, and the Bible teaches that the light in the dark world is us. That’s why I posted the other link to Matthew 5:16.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Please join me in praying for Mexico. Pray that the true Light will shine in the midst of the darkness, because as Psalm 139:10 says, “Even the darkness is not dark to you (God); the night is bright as the day.” Let us walk close to the light and shine it in the darkness.

The Greatness of a Seminary

Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in the numbers game when it comes to ministries. Seminaries are not immune to this problem. The first few years at the Mexican Baptist Theological Seminary were rough times for the youth ministry program. After having three students enter the first year to study youth ministry, two of them dropped out. Numbers were not what we had hoped. But we’ve learned a lot since then.

This video of Dr. Elmer Towns says it best. He is talking about leading Liberty University to be the largest Christian University in the world and about his thoughts on the greatness of the Seminary. I especially like what he says here (see clip), “The Greatness of a Seminary is not in the number of students you have. The greatness of a Seminary is what they do for God once they graduate.”

I’m excited to see what our graduates do for God after they graduate from the Seminary.

Look what we found at the grocery store!!!

For six and a half years we have “imported” marshmallows from the United States to Mexico City so that we could make things like rice crispy treats and chocolate fudge. Well, today we were at the grocery store and found a whole shelf full of mini-marshmallows. Needless to say we were pretty excited.

They have marshmallows, but usually they are flavored with strawberry or some other kind of flavoring (which are also yummy, but don’t make good peanut butter fudge).

So we bought a few bags and are now getting ready to make rice crispy treats!!!

A Quick Trip to Cuernavaca

Cuernavaca is about two hours away from where we live in Mexico City. The worst part of the drive is leaving the city, especially on the weekend. We went there last weekend so I could have a meeting with a pastor who is trying to get some youth ministry training there. I also taught their youth Sunday School class and preached in their church on Sunday morning.

It was a really quick trip, so the video is mostly a few clips of the kids and some views of the drive. There is some pretty cool video of the volcanoes covered in snow, too.

Mexico City Pyramids

I went to Teotihuacan on Wednesday with our friends who were visiting us here in Mexico City. The pyramids in Mexico are always fun to visit. It had been a while since I had been before, so I shot this video of our trip.

Day of the Dead in Mexico

A few days ago a friend of mine in the USA asked me about the day of the dead here in Mexico. I have written extensively on this before and recorded some stuff. Here are some links for you to check out if you’re interested in knowing more about the Celebration of the Day of the Dead in Mexico.
