The Olympics start tonight, and I saw this video today about moms all over the world. Watch it. It will inspire you.
As I was watching the video, I couldn’t help but think about a few things:
I always say that Janell’s ministry is more important than mine. Her ministry of nurturing our children is far more important to me than anything I teach professionally at the Seminary. She has an incredible ministry to them. I also think she’s Superwoman. She does so many things. I am blessed to be her husband.
The other thing I was thinking about was all the time and effort that many of us put into helping our children accomplish their dreams and goals. The Olympic games always make me think about the sacrifice and discipline it takes to be an expert at something (some say 1000 hours, others more).
The question that we need to ask ourselves is, “In what discipline am I helping my children develop expertise?” My prayer is that my kids will grow up to be men and women of God. If Janell and I can help them develop the necessary disciplines to grow in their faith, then we will have accomplished something.
I’m sure, though, that this is going to be at least as difficult as helping my child achieve athletic success.
Yesterday was our wedding anniversary. We have now been married for 15 years. Wow! I can’t believe it. I always say I can’t believe she’s put up with me for that long.
The Circus is in town, and a college friend of mine works for the entertainment company who runs it. So he got us tickets to go to yesterday’s opening performance of “The Greatest Show on Earth.”
We wanted to surprise the kids, so we didn’t tell them we were going to go. I was more excited than they were.
We left early for two reasons: So we could find the place (the arena is in a part of town we’ve never been to) and so we could see the pre-show. Of course, the typical happened: we got lost. But the good news is that we found the Arena and arrived an hour before the show. That is right when the pre-show is supposed to start.
One of our students comes over once a week to play with the kids and help them with their Spanish. She spends an hour or so with them, and she’s always bringing them fun gifts. The other day she brought chalk, which they absolutely love. Since she’s a graphic designer, she helps the kids turn the basketball court into a canvas.
This week, she brought some bubbles, so the kids played with her outside for a while, and I took the video above. You can also watch it on Vimeo.
It’s fun to watch our kids interact with our students. Sometimes being in another country is difficult, but God always provides people who step in and become “substitute family.”
I absolutely can’t believe that Nathan turned SEVEN last week. He has grown into a sweet little boy, and I am amazed everyday at how smart he is. (Remember this video of his birth?)
We had his party last Saturday with some friends, so of course I made a video of it. He still doesn’t like it when you sing to him, but that’s something you have to do at a birthday party.
