The Virgin of Guadalupe

Yesterday, Mexicans celebrated the day of the Virgin of Guadalupe. They say that millions of people made the pilgrimage to the Basilica where she first appeared to the indian Juan Diego. Here is the CNN story about it. Jim Cottrill has a good historical article about it on his blog.

It is a lot different when you live it and see it. We have visited the Basilica once, and it is a huge place. I couldn’t imagine being there when millions of people are there. When we visited, and we saw a few people crawling on their knees, but nothing, I’m sure, like the sight yesterday of 4 million people worshipping. There are shrines everywhere you go. Every taxi has a picture of her in it. We saw hundreds of people lined up to ride their bikes to the Basilica on Sunday. We heard the canons and fireworks on Sunday night. I wonder what Jesus thinks about it.

When you read stories like this one, you can’t help but think that it is a worship of someone other than Jesus. For many Mexicans, the Virgin is God. She is the one they worship more than Jesus. She is part of the trinity. In a culture that is very adoring of their mothers, one could expect to see some of this. I cannot help but wonder how all of this came about. Where does this devotion come from? It is definitely an interesting cultural phenomenon. It is a big challenge for evangelicals here in Mexico. Please pray for us as we try to minister in this culture.

This picture is of Nathan at the Christmas party. The audio clip was today when he was extremely happy.

Workday

I woke up at 5:55 this morning to finish studying for my sermon. Then, I went to church for the 9 o’clock service. I preached on Luke 9:18-27 and the steps to being a disciple of Christ. Then I returned home to pick up the family, drove the 30 minutes back to church, and preached again. We got home at 2 pm from church. I’m really tired. It was our last Sunday of the year, since we are going to Florida next week.

Tomorrow is the Guadalupe Day, when supposedly, the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego. So, we are hearing tons of canons and fireworks exploding getting ready to the huge celebration. On our way home from church today, we saw a group of people wearing t-shirts with the Virgin on the back of them, getting ready to ride their bikes to the bascilica.

Missionary Christmas Party

Today, we had a Christmas party with the missionaries from Mexico City. We met down at Capital City Baptist Church. There was turkey and ham (a treat here) and all sorts of fixings. There was also a lot of good dessert. We sang Christmas carols and thought about why we have Christmas. The kids had a gift exchange, and Nathan received a little kids’ telephone. He loves people, and the people love him. He’s the only little baby at these things, so everyone goos and gaas over him. He’s a stud.

Almost Christmas

It’s almost Christmas. The stuff is piling up. This morning in my Youth Ministry class, I tried to cheer up my students by telling them that this is the last weekend of the quarter. The following weekend there will be no more homework or tests. If we can all just get through this weekend. I am preaching at church this weekend, and I haven’t had any great inspiration yet. I am still praying and waiting on God, but I’d love to be finished with the sermon. Tomorrow, I have no classes, so maybe then I will hear something.

Today we went to the mall to shop for a gift for an 8 year old girl who lives in an orphanage here in Mexico City. Janell goes to a Bible study every Thursday, and tomorrow they are having a party with the children from the orphanage, too. So, we got her some stuff. Janell is also busy baking today. We are giving baked goods as gifts. Saturday is a missionary Christmas get-together with all the missionaries from Mexico City. It should be fun. We sure are busy! It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
