7 Reasons I hate 7 am classes

I have class at 7 am every Tuesday and Thursday. It’s really bad to have class that early. There are a TON of reasons why I hate having class at that hour. Here are seven of them.

  1. The students haven’t eaten yet. It’s hard to get out of bed without anything to eat and still be awake for class. One of the first things you want to do when you wake up is eat, but the students at the seminary don’t have that privilege. They have to wait until 9 am for breakfast. An empty stomach is bad for learning.
  2. It’s still dark outside. When I walk to class, it’s dark outside. When we are in class, it’s still dark. When we leave class, it’s a little lighter. This isn’t good for the awake-ness of anyone. Who wants to go somewhere when it’s dark outside?
  3. Nobody else is at the seminary. The seminary feels like a ghost town at 7 am. There is very little action, making it quiet and not conducive for learning.
  4. They just got out of bed, and I’m supposed to keep them awake. I know I’m an interesting teacher, but have you ever tried to get a discussion going at the crack of dawn (or before)?
  5. Nobody wants to be there. When the students would rather be sleeping, it’s bad. When the teacher would rather be sleeping, it’s a bad thing, too. At seven in the morning, both of those statements are true.
  6. Getting up so early causes problems at night. On Mondays and Wednesdays, I have to go to bed early so I can get up on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I barely can stay awake from having gotten up so early. It’s a no win situation.
  7. I have to creep around the house in the morning. In order to not wake up the baby or Janell, I have to tip-toe around the house in the dark morning. It’s not easy to do that without waking someone up.

There are also some benefits to early class. I’ll let you know if I think of some.

Youth pastor meeting

I just got back from meeting with Josue (the youth pastor at First Baptist) at Starbucks. It’s so cool to get together with people who are like-minded and involved in the same ministry as you are. There’s something encouraging about it, knowing that there is so much potential for impact. I’m looking forward to seeing what God does in the next few years in his church and in this country.

A Good Weekend

Nathan and his buddy

It was a good weekend. We had lunch on Sunday after church with some of our missionary friends. Nathan just loves hanging out with the other MKs. It’s funny to think of him as a missionary kid. Anyway, we had a pretty good weekend.

Are you ready for some football?

We’re planning our menu for Thursday night’s opener between Miami and Pittsburgh. Right now, it’s looking like we’ll be making:

  • Chicken Wings
  • Mozzarella sticks
  • Jalapeño poppers

Yummy! Maybe we’ll add some other stuff to the menu, too. I’m looking forward to this football season. It’s going to be interesting to see if the Dolphins can get the AFC East title. We bought Sunday Ticket (cheap, too), I started a fantasy football league, and Nathan is going to learn what it means to be a football fan! It’s going to be fun.

When in Mexico

jalapeno.jpgWe decided to clean out the ugly planter in our back yard and plant an herb garden. I decided that I would plant some chilis. So, we bought some jalapeños, cayenne peppers, chilis serranos, and chilis habaneros. With any luck, in a few months it might be a good crop of peppers. Janell is planting some herbs like cilantro and basil. She’s also planting some onions and zucchini. We’ll see how they do with us caring for them.
