I’ve included a reading category in my major goals for 2009, which are broken down according to quarter. So, for April to June 2009, here is my list of books I’m trying to read.
Easter in Mexico
Many Christians bemoan the cultural expressions of Christianity, or the cultural alternatives to Christian holidays. The Easter bunny takes center stage, and the passion and resurrection of Jesus is sometimes seen as an afterthought.
Easter bonnets, new dresses, a ham feast with family, and other things are all part of our cultural heritage. They were all part of how I grew to celebrate Easter as a child (within the context of a Christian family). Living in Mexico has allowed me to see a little of how another culture has shaped the holiday.

Yesterday we took Nathan bowling at the arcade here in Mexico. He and I bowled. He was really good. He even got a strike! Check out the video.

Good Friday in Iztapalapa Mexico
Mexico City is the home of the largest re-enactment of the Way of the Cross in the world. For months, people in Iztapalapa prepare for the re-enactment of the Passion of the Christ (click here for the official website in Spanish), and they have done it since 1843.

Young People and Stress
It is true that all over the world young people are looking for ways to relieve stress in their lives. I thought this article over at YPulse was interesting about how young people relieve stress. According to the article that YPulse references, “stress is the invisible global constant afflicting youth of all ages in all markets.”

This is a video from our recent trip to Xochimilco (pronounced So-Chee-Milk-Oh). We went there last week, and while we were there, we asked these guys to play the Marimba. It’s a great instrument and was really fun to watch them.

Life is a Vapor
I’ve been stunned lately by the deaths of some family and friends. My grandmother died late last year. My Uncle died last week. One of my best friends from high school was found dead this morning.
Thinking about death makes me think about what I do on a daily basis. It makes me think about the way I treat people and respond to situations. It makes me think about the plans I make and how I spend my time. It makes me want to dedicate myself to live better.
When I think about life and death, I am drawn to James 4:14.

We had a lot of fun today at Xochimilco. Nathan and Ben were good on the boat and shopping at the markets. The adventure wasn’t over after we got off the boats, though. As usual, traveling in Mexico City is always an adventure.
